The Pentagon will appoint a dedicated head of its unmanned systems division
The U.S. Department of Defense has carried out a large-scale organizational restructuring, consolidating all activities related to autonomous and unmanned technologies under the leadership of a newly created position.
The head of this sector will now report directly to the Deputy Secretary of Defense, which significantly elevates the status and coordination of these programs within the department.
The head of the directly reporting portfolio for unmanned systems will be responsible for overseeing and managing all activities related to unmanned aerial vehicles.
His responsibilities will also include overseeing targeted funding for relevant defense programs across all departments of the ministry.
The new structure encompasses the work of organizations such as Joint Interagency Task Force 401 and the Defense Innovation Unit.
In addition, the official will oversee Department of Defense programs aimed at implementing state-of-the-art autonomous warfare capabilities.
“This structural reorganization directly embodies a series of decisive steps taken by the administration. Drones and autonomous systems are the most important innovation on the battlefield for the current generation,” said the Pentagon’s chief spokesperson.
In this way, the department seeks to optimize the use of technological resources as much as possible in the complex conditions of the modern battlefield.
Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump signed executive orders calling for a comprehensive overhaul of defense procurement procedures.
The main goal of these changes is to provide the U.S. Armed Forces with the most powerful and advanced combat capabilities in the world.
A key element of this strategy is the “Unleashing American Drone Dominance” initiative.
It requires the Department of Defense to focus on procuring, integrating, and training personnel exclusively in the use of highly effective, U.S.-manufactured drones.
By implementing these measures, the administration aims not only to strengthen the U.S.’s position in the global defense sector but also to ensure a technological advantage over potential adversaries.
Strengthening centralized control will allow for a faster response to challenges and more effective implementation of innovative developments within military units.
