In St. Petersburg, a man was sentenced to 6 years in prison for reposting Ukrainian news stories

The Nevsky District Court of St. Petersburg sentenced 36-year-old Yegor Gulyayev to six years in a penal colony under a law prohibiting the dissemination of “fake news” about the Russian army. The man was accused of reposting content from the Telegram channel of the Ukrainian news agency UNIAN.

Specifically, Gulyayev posted three articles on his VKontakte page about the shooting by Russian troops of a convoy of women and children during their evacuation from the village of Peremoga, the murder of Anastasia Tagirova, a student at the National Pedagogical University, and violence against children as reported by lawyers at a UN meeting. He made all these reposts in March and September 2022.

During the court hearing, Gulyayev stated that he does not harbor hatred toward the Russian military. According to him, he shared the news to cope with stress, as he has relatives living in Zaporizhzhia. Gulyaev said he “made a mistake” and “did not fully realize the extent of the danger to society,” considering his VKontakte page to be a private space. He also asked the court “not to ruin his life” and to remove the motive of “political hatred” from the wording of the charges.

This was reported by Russian propaganda media.
