In Poland, a former deputy minister has been found guilty of insulting Ukrainians

A court in Poland has found Krzysztof Tolwiński, a former deputy finance minister in Jarosław Kaczyński’s government, guilty of insulting Ukrainians and inciting ethnic hatred.

This was reported by WP.

The verdict was handed down by a district court in Białystok after the local prosecutor’s office had twice closed the case, finding no evidence of a crime in the politician’s words. The proceedings were ultimately initiated by an indictment filed by Ukrainian journalist Ihor Kravets in cooperation with the Center for Monitoring Racist and Xenophobic Manifestations.

The indictment cited online posts and recordings by the former deputy minister in which he referred to Ukrainians as “Bandera rabble” and “primitive creatures whose sole purpose is to destroy our culture.” The politician also called for Ukrainians to be expelled from Poland before “the plague completely infects society.”

The court confirmed that from March to May 2022, the defendant publicly incited hatred on ethnic grounds.

“The evidence clearly showed that his statements were offensive in nature and incited hatred toward Ukrainian citizens,” noted attorney Magdalena Spisak, who represented the plaintiffs.

She added that using the term “Banderites” to refer to all Ukrainians is unacceptable. According to Igor Kravets, the defendant behaved demagogically in the courtroom, repeating that he was being tried for his political views.
