Poland plans to begin production of M88A2 armored vehicles
The American company BAE Systems has signed a memorandum of understanding with two Polish defense companies regarding the possible launch of localized production of M88A2 armored recovery vehicles in Poland.
If the agreements are implemented, production of these vehicles could be launched in Poland. The initiative aims to strengthen the country’s defense industry and expand its capabilities for producing modern military equipment.
The agreement was signed with Wojskowe Zakłady Motoryzacyjne (WZM) and H. Cegielski-Poznań (HCP). Both companies are part of the state-owned defense holding company PGZ Capital Group and specialize in the maintenance and production of tracked armored vehicles.
In addition, the signed document paves the way for the direct assembly of evacuation vehicles in Poland.
The new agreement is based on a licensing agreement that BAE Systems and WZM signed in 2025. That document pertained to the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of recovery and evacuation vehicles.
The M88A2 heavy recovery vehicle is a specialized recovery variant designed to support the M1 Abrams main battle tanks. The vehicle features increased engine power and enhanced armor protection, including side track shields and additional armor panels.
The vehicle is capable of evacuating damaged equipment weighing up to 70 metric tons, along with its crew, to a safe location.
This was announced by the British defense contractor, according to the UK Defence Journal.

Poland has begun the official process of establishing a permanent U.S. military base on its territory. The government has already approved the decision, and the defense minister has been authorized to negotiate with the U.S. side and prepare the necessary infrastructure.
More than a thousand U.S. service members are leaving Lithuania following the completion of a scheduled rotation. At the same time, the timing of the next contingent’s arrival and its size remain undetermined, the country’s defense minister stated.
