Poland has set up special task forces of prosecutors to investigate attacks on Ukrainians
On July 29, special teams of prosecutors were established in Poland to investigate crimes motivated by ethnic hatred, including attacks on Ukrainian citizens.
More than 100 prosecutors have already undergone special training and are working in district prosecutor’s offices across the country. Three more specialized prosecutors are working at the Warsaw District Prosecutor’s Office, which handles a significant number of such cases.
Polish Minister of Justice Waldemar Żurek stated that the decision to create these teams was made due to the rise in the number of crimes motivated by ethnic hatred. According to him, previously, a significant portion of such cases never reached court.
“This was a weak point for the prosecutor’s office. That is precisely why we created this unit. In a very short time, we have already referred more than 280 indictments to the courts, so the changes in the structure of the prosecutor’s office have yielded results,” the minister noted.
According to data from the Polish National Police Headquarters, by early June 2026, Ukrainian citizens had been victims of 5,130 crimes. By comparison, 10,620 such cases were recorded in the country throughout 2025, and 10,595 in 2024.
The Polish prosecutor’s office notes that the new specialized units are intended to ensure more effective investigations of crimes related to xenophobia and ethnic hatred.
