A dispute is ongoing in Poland over the transfer of Patriot missiles to Ukraine

A political conflict is ongoing in Poland between President Karol Nawrocki and the government over the transfer of PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine as part of the U.S. Patriot air defense systems.

These missiles are used to intercept ballistic and cruise missiles, as well as other aerial targets, and are considered one of the most effective means of air defense.

Polish Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the president’s representatives are spreading false information by claiming that Karol Nawrocki was not informed about the transfer of these missiles to Ukraine. According to him, the issue was discussed on multiple occasions at meetings of the government’s security committee, which included representatives from the Presidential National Security Bureau, as well as during contacts with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

In response, President Navrotsky stated that the decision to transfer military aid was made exclusively by the government, and therefore the Cabinet of Ministers must bear full political responsibility for this step. He also suggested that he might initiate legislative changes to more clearly define the procedure for approving the transfer of weapons to other countries.

At the same time, the Office of the President insists that the decision to transfer the missiles was not coordinated with either the head of state or his National Security Bureau. They also stated that, in their view, the transfer of missiles to Ukraine did not enhance Poland’s security, and the manner in which this decision was made caused dissatisfaction among a segment of Polish society.

The controversy erupted after it became known that Poland had transferred PAC-3 missiles to Ukraine this year for use with Patriot systems, which are deployed to protect Ukrainian cities from Russian missile attacks.

As a reminder, the U.S. has allocated a $2 billion loan to Poland for the purchase of weapons: F-35 fighter jets, Patriot air defense systems, and Abrams tanks.

Earlier, Poland signed an agreement with the U.S. to supply 96 AH-64E Apache Guardian attack helicopters, along with a logistics and training package, for a total of $10 billion.
