Poland held its first Ukrainian language high school graduation exam: 98% of students passed the exam

Poland has released the results of the first-ever final exam in Ukrainian as a foreign language. 98% of the graduates who chose this subject successfully passed the matura exam.

According to the Central Examination Commission of Poland (CKE), 321,314 graduates of Polish schools took the matura exam in 2026. For the first time, they were able to choose Ukrainian as a foreign language. Previously, it had been available only as a national minority language.

A total of 471 students registered for the Ukrainian as a Foreign Language exam. According to the test results, 98% of them successfully passed the exam. The exam could be taken at the basic, advanced, or bilingual levels.

At the same time, 64 students took the Ukrainian language exam as a national minority language. All of them passed the exam.

The Central Examination Commission reported that the full results of the high school graduation exam—which will also include those who took the exams in June and August—will be released on September 11.

The initiative to introduce Ukrainian as a second foreign language was spearheaded by Pavlo Levchuk, a research fellow at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He is also the author of the curriculum for teaching Ukrainian as a second foreign language in Polish high schools.

The matura is a nationwide exam taken upon completion of secondary school in Poland. It is not mandatory, but its results are required for admission to Polish institutions of higher education.

This is reported by “Nash Vybir,” a portal for Ukrainians in Poland.
