Construction of Europe's tallest statue of the Virgin Mary is nearing completion in Poland
In the Polish village of Konotopie, near Toruń, construction is nearing completion on a monumental statue of the Mother of God, which, once finished, will be the tallest sculpture of its kind in Europe. The future monument will stand 55.6 meters tall, surpassing the famous statues of Christ in Rio de Janeiro and Świebodzin, Poland.
Construction began in 2025 and is scheduled for completion in August 2026. The solemn consecration of the monument is set to take place on August 15—the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The project is being funded by Polish billionaire entrepreneur Roman Karkosik, who is its founder. The total height of the structure will consist of two parts: the figure of the Virgin Mary itself will be 40 meters tall, and the crown-shaped pedestal will add another 15.6 meters.
Inside the pedestal, there are plans to create an observation deck from which visitors will be able to enjoy a panoramic view of the surrounding area.
According to the designers’ vision, the monument is intended to be not only a record-breaking structure in terms of scale but also a place for prayer, spiritual reflection, and pilgrimage. Approximately 2,500 cubic meters of concrete were used in its construction.
Although construction is not yet complete, the site has already begun to attract tourists and pilgrims. Local authorities hope that once it opens, Konotopye will become one of Poland’s new major centers for religious tourism.
At the same time, this large-scale project has already sparked public debate. Some members of the public are criticizing the construction costs, noting that the company owned by Roman Karkosik is simultaneously laying off employees. Critics are questioning the billionaire’s funding priorities in light of these changes.
