An explosion occurred at the Gunvor facility in the Port of Rotterdam: one person was killed

On August 13, an explosion occurred at an oil facility operated by Gunvor Energy in the Europort industrial zone at the Port of Rotterdam. One person was killed, and several others were injured and hospitalized, according to Euronews.

The explosion occurred around 11:30 a.m. at Europe’s largest port. Forensic investigators and representatives of the Dutch labor inspectorate were dispatched to the scene. Emergency services secured the facility’s perimeter.

In the area of the incident, a damaged wall and signs of the explosion on a storage tank were visible. Police spokesperson Daan Valkenburg stated that investigators are considering all possible causes of the incident but have not yet reached any conclusions.

Gunvor Energy operates an oil refinery and a fuel terminal in this area. Dutch broadcaster NOS reported that a repair crew was working on a section of piping at the time of the explosion, but authorities have not confirmed this information.

On the same day, a separate power outage occurred in another part of the port after a transformer caught fire. As a result, several companies suspended operations and evacuated their employees. Emergency services stated that this incident was not related to the explosion.
