In Russia, two Estonian citizens who crossed the border via Lake Peipus and requested political asylum were taken into custody. Following their arrest, they were also forcibly subjected to a psychiatric evaluation.
According to Russian media reports, 42-year-old Rando and 25-year-old Danil (names changed) crossed the border in January and February 2026.
After their arrest, a court in the Pskov region charged them with illegally crossing the border and sent them to a pretrial detention center; in March, the court extended their detention until June.
One of the men wrote in a letter to journalists that while in custody, they were taken for “examination” to a psychiatric hospital, where they were given injections without explanation. According to Russian media reports, this is likely a specialized facility in St. Petersburg.
In his letter, Danil wrote that he is being held in a cold, damp solitary confinement cell infested with mice, lacks hygiene supplies, and is not receiving adequate food.
"I’m wearing two pairs of pants, two warm sweaters, and a hat—and I’m still cold. They turned off the heat, and I still haven’t received any toilet paper," he said.
He explained that he had sought political asylum in Russia due to difficult life circumstances and a lack of opportunities to find work in Estonia.
Russian human rights activist Svetlana Gannushkina, commenting on the situation, noted that according to the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, people seeking political asylum should not face criminal charges for illegally crossing the border.
