Russia proposes tax on chips and sweets to combat obesity

In Russia, public activists have submitted a proposal to Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Grigorenko to introduce a tax on chips, snacks, fast food, and sweets. The primary aim is to curb the rising obesity rate, which has increased by 52% over the past five years.

The initiative’s authors believe that taxing these products will reduce their affordability and thereby decrease consumption of unhealthy food. The rising obesity rate poses serious health and economic challenges, and the proposed tax is intended to address this issue.

If approved, the tax could be implemented soon, potentially impacting the food market and shifting consumer choices towards healthier alternatives.
