Romania has confirmed that the downed Shahed was of Russian origin

The Romanian prosecutor’s office has determined that the drone shot down on July 24 over Buzău County was a Russian “Shahed”-type drone. Law enforcement officials officially confirmed the drone’s origin following a technical examination.

The Ploiești Court of Appeals Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the drone shot down on July 24 in Padina (Buzău County) was a “Shahed” model—that is, Russian-made.

This has also been confirmed by experts from the Romanian Ministry of Defense.

Prosecutors announced the opening of a criminal case for the offense of operating an aircraft in a restricted zone. This offense is defined in Romania’s Air Code.

In addition to the drone itself, investigators had to separately examine the details of its destruction. The missile fired by Italian pilots from a Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jet missed its target and created a crater at the crash site in Brăila County.

In the Padina area (Buzău County), field teams discovered debris from the drone, as well as the interceptor missile itself. All fragments were collected by the military for analysis.

As a reminder, on July 24, an F-16 fighter jet of the Romanian Air Force shot down a drone that had entered the country’s airspace for the first time. The incident marked the first combat use of a Romanian F-16 against an intruding drone.

On the afternoon of July 23, an air raid alert was declared in the Romanian county of Tulcea, which borders Ukraine, due to a Russian attack on the Odesa region.

Four NATO fighter jets were scrambled in response to a drone over Romania.
