An explosion occurred at a Roscosmos facility in St. Petersburg; there are fatalities

On June 8, an explosion followed by a fire occurred in an industrial zone near Finlandsky Station in St. Petersburg.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations, the fire broke out at 32 Mineralnaya Street, where, according to open sources, a production building of the Arsenal plant—part of the Roscosmos structure—is located.

It is reported that at least four people died as a result of the incident. “Two were found inside the burned-out building, and two more were trapped under the rubble,” Russian media reported. There are also reports of two people hospitalized with injuries of varying severity, although the Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed only two casualties.

According to local media, a hangar containing chemical reagents was on fire, and the fire covered an area of about 400 square meters. Firefighting efforts lasted approximately nine hours and involved a special fire train. A powerful blast wave destroyed a brick fence near the railroad tracks, temporarily halting train traffic at the station.

Black smoke from the fire was visible from various parts of St. Petersburg.

The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation has opened a criminal case under the article on violations of safety rules during work, which carries a sentence of up to seven years in prison. The leading theory is that the fire was caused by the ignition of acetone vapors.

The Arsenal plant manufactures products for the Russian space and defense industries, including satellites, artillery systems, and missile components. The company is subject to sanctions by the U.S., the U.K., and the EU as part of Russia’s defense-industrial complex.

As a reminder, on the morning of June 9, a BMW X3 exploded in Balashikha, near Moscow, killing the driver. The incident occurred in the Aviatorov neighborhood on Koldunova Street.

In the Belgorod region of the Russian Federation, a powerful explosion occurred at an ammunition depot, after which a prolonged secondary detonation began at the facility.

On June 3 and during the night of June 4, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck a number of key military targets belonging to the Russian aggressor.
