A group of U.S. senators from the Republican and Democratic parties has introduced a bipartisan bill aimed at protecting religious freedom in Ukraine. The bill is intended to counter Russia’s actions, which, according to U.S. lawmakers, violate religious rights and freedoms on Ukrainian territory.
This is stated in a joint statement published on the website of the chairman of the Helsinki Commission, Republican Congressman Joe Wilson.
“Russia persecutes and kills believers as a political objective wherever it invades. War criminal Putin seeks to prevent the free worship of all believers and destroys any religion that does not submit to its state church and the corrupt former KGB agent Patriarch Kirill, or otherwise does not yield to repressive state control. Believers in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine face particular cruelty. It is crucial that we stand up to Russia’s war on religion,” Wilson commented.
It is noted that this bipartisan initiative requires the Secretary of State and the Secretary of Defense to jointly report on Russia’s actions regarding the persecution, suppression, and violation of the religious freedoms of religious communities in Ukraine and in territories temporarily occupied by Russia.
The bill also directs the U.S. president to impose sanctions against foreign individuals implicated in these actions.
