Serbia has begun granting citizenship to Russians who have renounced their Russian passports
Serbia has begun granting citizenship to Russian nationals who previously renounced their Russian passports but had remained stateless for a long time.
This was reported by the Telegram channel “Volna.”
This concerns several dozen people who went through the naturalization process but ended up in a legal “gray zone.” They had previously received preliminary approval for Serbian citizenship, after which they renounced their Russian passports; however, their final documents were not issued due to additional checks.
As a result, these people effectively became stateless—without citizenship or valid documents. Their only form of identification was a foreigner’s card, which simultaneously indicated Russian citizenship.
Now, Serbian authorities have begun addressing this issue and issuing final documents that allow for the issuance of identity cards and foreign passports.
As a reminder, Serbia has extended its ban on the export of crude oil and petroleum products to protect the domestic market from shortages and sharp price hikes amid the U.S. and Israeli war against Iran.
Serbia has stepped up security at energy infrastructure facilities involved in the supply of Russian gas to Hungary, which is routed via Turkey.
