Two children injured in Sydney after pursuit and suspected carjacking
In western Sydney, Australia, two children sustained minor injuries during an incident involving a police pursuit, a collision and the suspected taking of a car. According to ABC News Australia, a 36-year-old driver was transporting the children when he entered the oncoming lane of the M4 motorway and collided with an approaching vehicle.
Pursuit began in Belmore
New South Wales Police arrived in Belmore to check on the driver's welfare. According to law enforcement, the man failed to stop when ordered to do so by police, after which a pursuit began.
The pursuit continued to Auburn, where it was called off because of the man's manner of driving. Later, police said, he entered the oncoming lane of the M4 motorway and collided with another vehicle.

Injuries during confrontation
After the collision, the driver got out of the car with the two children and, police allege, tried to take another vehicle. A 25-year-old man intervened and sustained a knife wound to his arm during the confrontation.
Police said the man then allegedly took the vehicle of a woman who had stopped to help, put the children inside and drove westbound along the M4. He was detained on Cumberland Highway in Wentworthville by an off-duty police officer with the help of witnesses. The man was taken to hospital under guard, while the children were taken to The Children's Hospital at Westmead as a precaution. Police are still awaiting the opportunity to interview the man to establish the circumstances of the incident.
