Voting continues at 61 polling stations in Skardu, Pakistan — Dawn
Voting is underway in Pakistan’s Skardu in the by-election for constituency GBA-09 (Skardu-III). Polling stations opened at 8:00 a.m. and will operate until 5:00 p.m. under heightened security measures, Dawn reports.
Number of voters and polling stations
According to the state broadcaster PTV, 33,985 voters will be able to take part in the vote. There are 61 polling stations operating in the constituency.
Hamza Murad, the district official responsible for conducting the election, said that 25 stations had been assigned to sensitive Category A. Another 11 stations were classified as Category B with a medium level of sensitivity, while 25 were classified as regular Category C stations.

Candidates in the by-election
The Gilgit-Baltistan Election Commission scheduled the by-election after the Gilgit-Baltistan Supreme Appellate Court disqualified PPP candidate Fida Muhammad Nashad. He had previously been declared elected following the general election in June.
Akhtar Abbas, the son of the disqualified candidate, is running for the PPP. Muhammad Ajmal has been nominated by the PML-N, while former minister Muhammad Saleem is taking part in the election as an independent candidate. In total, 10 candidates submitted documents to participate. Analysts interviewed by the publication expected a competitive contest between Abbas and Saleem.
