Legendary jazz saxophonist Sonny Rollins has died in the U.S. — The Guardian

Sonny Rollins, the renowned American jazz musician, saxophonist, and composer, has died at his home in Woodstock, New York, at the age of 95.

The Guardian reports this.

Sonny Rollins is considered one of the most influential and outstanding jazz performers in world history.

The official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, but it is known that in recent years the musician suffered from a serious illness—pulmonary fibrosis.

Due to health complications, the legendary performer was forced to stop active concert performances. He gave his last concert in 2012, and since 2014, he has completely stopped appearing on stage.

The announcement of the artist’s passing was published “with deep sorrow and boundless love.”

The statement also included philosophical reflections from the musician himself, who believed in reincarnation and the transmigration of souls. Sonny Rollins asserted that dying is easy, but living is hard.

“I think that when a creative person ends their existence, they continue it in the next existence. I am a person who believes that this life is not the end of everything,” he said.

The musician began his illustrious career in the late 1940s and has since released over 60 successful albums.

Throughout his career, he actively collaborated with other titans of the American music scene, including Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, and John Coltrane.

Rollins possessed a unique gift for expanding and reinterpreting vivid musical phrases into epic solos.

For this approach, renowned saxophonist Branford Marsalis called him “the greatest improviser in the history of jazz” alongside Louis Armstrong.
