In the U.S., more than 20 metric tons of squid spilled onto the highway after a car accident

In the town of Narragansett, Rhode Island, a tractor-trailer carrying squid to a processing plant overturned. More than 20 metric tons of seafood spilled onto the road, according to The Guardian.

According to local police, the accident occurred on Sunday morning after the driver failed to make a turn. The truck tipped onto its side, and a significant portion of the cargo spilled onto the roadway.

The incident caused major traffic disruptions in the area, and the road was closed from approximately 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Firefighters and other workers used forklifts to clear the squid from the roadway. In the afternoon, temperatures in the state exceeded 27°C.

Richard Stevens, a local resident and fisherman, told WJAR that the smell quickly spread throughout the neighborhood. According to him, squid have a distinctive, pungent odor that becomes particularly strong when they lie on the asphalt for a while.

The truck driver and passenger were unharmed. According to ABC News, the Rhode Island State Police issued the driver a citation for improperly securing the cargo.

Millions of pounds of long-fin and short-fin squid pass through Rhode Island’s ports each year and are then distributed throughout the country. Squid is also the state’s official snack.
