In the U.S., schools will pay students for good attendance

The Detroit School District in the U.S. is expanding a program that offers financial incentives to students for regular attendance. If students do not miss classes without a valid reason, they will be eligible to receive weekly payments.

Under the expanded program, students in grades 6–8 will receive $50 per week for perfect attendance.

High school students will receive $100 per week, provided they do not miss classes without a valid reason.

Thus, a high school student who meets all the program’s requirements could theoretically receive up to $400 per month.

The program was introduced due to high absenteeism rates in the district’s schools.

At the end of the 2024–2025 school year, 61% of students had missed at least 10% of the school year. Therefore, local authorities decided to encourage students to attend classes regularly not only through traditional methods but also financially.

According to district data, this initiative has already helped increase the number of students with regular attendance, prompting a decision to expand it to middle school grades as well.

In addition to cash payments, the school district plans to improve transportation access for students.

Specifically, free transportation is planned for children from kindergarten through 12th grade. This way, transportation issues should no longer be a reason for missing school.

Detroit officials expect that financial incentives and improved transportation access will help reduce the number of absences and increase attendance.

At the same time, payments are intended specifically for regular attendance without absences, rather than simply for being enrolled in school.

This is reported by The Metro Detroit News.

As a reminder, Ukrainian parents have already submitted more than 127,000 applications for the “Schoolchild’s Package.” Of these, 121,000 applications have already been successfully processed.
