Racers died during qualifying at the Isle of Man Grand Prix
Two motorcycle racers were killed in crashes during the qualifying rounds of this year’s Isle of Man Grand Prix. The tragic incidents occurred during preparations for the race.
The victims were 29-year-old Swiss rider Mauro Ponchini and 37-year-old Sam Noton, a resident of the Isle of Man, who is survived by his wife and four children.
Mauro Ponchini died during the first qualifying lap after colliding with another racer. The crash occurred on the Cruickshanks section of the track in Ramsey at approximately 6:50 p.m. local time.
Another fatal incident occurred on the western section of the track. Sam Noton was the victim.
For the 37-year-old rider, this was only his second start at the Isle of Man Grand Prix. He first competed in the event in 2025.
After his death, Noton’s wife, Charlotte, wrote on Facebook that she didn’t know if she would ever be able to come to terms with the loss of her husband, whom she called “my whole world.”
“I don’t think I’ll ever be able to come to terms with what happened yesterday. I’m absolutely devastated—it’s hard to even imagine. Sam was my whole world, my best friend, my partner in life. We were a team, and right now every minute is hard for me to get through—the thought of life without him makes me sick. Thank you all for your messages and support. A long road lies ahead for me and our little ones.”
This year’s Isle of Man Grand Prix is not the first to be marred by fatal accidents.
In May, 33-year-old Daniel Ingham died from a chest injury sustained in a crash.
Four days earlier, 68-year-old Alan Oversby died during the race. The cause of death was an aortic rupture. Oversby was a seasoned Isle of Man Grand Prix competitor and had 16 victories in the race.
Despite the tragedies, organizers stated that the competition will continue and conclude on August 28.
The Isle of Man Grand Prix is considered one of the most dangerous motorcycle races in the world. Riders navigate a challenging course at high speeds that can exceed 321 km/h.
The race is held annually on the Isle of Man, which is under the sovereignty of the British Crown.
