An underground tunnel was discovered on the border between Latvia and Belarus: 28 migrants were detained

On August 20, Latvian border guards detained 28 people who had illegally crossed the state border in the Kraslava area. 

According to the border guard service, the migrants entered Latvia through an underground tunnel dug from the Belarusian side.

After detaining the individuals, border guards searched the surrounding area and discovered an underground passage concealed beneath moss approximately 20 meters from the border.

All 28 detainees were held accountable in accordance with the law and returned to their country of origin.

On August 14, Latvian Prime Minister Andris Kulbergs commented on the incident involving a drone that violated the country’s airspace. According to him, the incident confirmed the effectiveness of Latvia’s air defense system.
