A gas explosion has destroyed a residential building in the U.S.: there are fatalities
A massive gas explosion occurred in a residential building in Dallas. On May 28, the incident completely destroyed a two-story apartment building and caused a massive fire. According to preliminary reports, there are fatalities, and an investigation into the circumstances of the tragedy is underway.
The Associated Press reports on this.
The tragedy occurred just as firefighters arrived at the scene in response to a call about a gas leak. The city’s fire and rescue service confirmed that there were fatalities, but the exact number of victims and those missing has not yet been disclosed, as the mission has officially shifted from a rescue operation to a recovery operation. Currently, dozens of rescue workers continue to sift through the smoldering debris, of which practically nothing remains except a charred skeleton.
According to preliminary data, at least four victims have been hospitalized. According to a statement by the gas company Atmos Energy, the cause of the disaster was damage to the pipeline by an outside construction crew that was working near the building. Local residents recall that a strong smell of gas was noticeable inside the building even the day before the explosion. The moment of detonation was so powerful that in neighboring buildings a block away from the epicenter, walls shook, objects fell from the ceilings, and people’s ears popped. Due to the threat of further explosions, the gas supply throughout the area was temporarily shut off.
Authorities set up a family reunification center at a nearby middle school, where relatives and friends of residents who still cannot get in touch with them are flocking. Many people lost all their belongings and pets in the sudden explosion, managing to run out into the street with only the clothes on their backs. A specialized investigative team and representatives of the gas company continue to work at the scene alongside firefighters to establish all the details of the tragedy.
