In the U.S., a federal jury in St. Paul (Minnesota) found 73-year-old Robert Philip Ivers guilty of writing and distributing a 236-page manuscript—a “manifesto”—titled “How to Kill a Federal Judge.”
Ivers was convicted on three counts, including sending threats and making death threats against a federal judge. Law enforcement officials launched the investigation after receiving a tip from library staff in Weizat, who had seen printouts of the materials and received a flyer from him advertising a “guide for extremists.” During a search of the suspect’s vehicle, 20 copies of the manuscript were seized.
The text contained threats against the judiciary, specifically U.S. District Judge Robert Pratt of Iowa, who in 2019 sentenced Ivers to 18 months in prison for similar threats against another judge. Copies of the book were mailed to law firms and judges; however, the charge of threatening U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts was later dropped after prosecutors changed their case.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, threats against 299 federal judges have been recorded so far this fiscal year.
