US woman charged with murder of her two-year-old son
In Frankfort, Illinois, US, 40-year-old Cora Walsh was charged with three counts of first-degree murder after her two-year-old son Barrett was found dead in the basement of the family home on September 1. This was reported by CBC World.
Case circumstances
According to court documents, police were called to the home shortly before 4:00 p.m. after a neighbor found the child in the basement. The neighbor began performing CPR and called 911. The boy was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that the cause of death was asphyxiation resulting from ligature compression of the neck. In a motion to hold Walsh in custody before trial, prosecutors said she was found in another part of the house with injuries that law enforcement believed she had inflicted on herself. Walsh was hospitalized, and authorities described her injuries as non-life-threatening.

References to Lindsay Clancy's trial
Prosecutors also said that Walsh had been closely following the trial of Massachusetts resident Lindsay Clancy and had been exchanging messages with friends about the case until about 12:30 p.m. that day. Less than four hours later, a neighbor found Barrett.
According to prosecutors, Walsh later told investigators that she killed her son because she believed he was “the devil” and “the antichrist.” Her attorney, Andrea Lyon, told reporters that her client had been experiencing a psychotic episode and called the boy's death a tragedy for the entire family.
Several days earlier, a Massachusetts court declared Clancy's trial a mistrial because jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision. Clancy was charged with murdering three children in 2023. At the same time, Illinois law enforcement officials have not said that the Clancy case influenced Barrett's death, and the released information does not establish such a connection.
