In the United States, MS NOW journalists were denied access to the White House grounds in Washington on the morning of September 19. This happened the day after President Donald Trump said that MS NOW, CNN, and Politico would be barred from working at the White House because of their coverage of his activities, CNBC reports.

MS NOW said that its journalists had been denied access to the White House grounds earlier that same day. The media outlet stressed that the White House belongs to the American people and that the decisions made there are funded by taxpayers’ money.
MS NOW also said that it intends to take all necessary measures to protect the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution and the role of independent journalism in democracy. The outlet added that it would continue covering the activities of the president, his administration, and issues affecting Americans.

Trump’s position
The day before, Trump wrote on Truth Social that these media outlets, in his words, should not constantly spread “fabrications and lies” when covering the U.S. president, his administration, or the country. He also said that the ban could extend to other media outlets that he called fake.
Later, in the Oval Office, Trump explained his decision by referring to the totality of publications by the three media outlets. The president also said that he considered it important to publicly point out this decision, even if it does not withstand a court challenge. CNBC notes that in 2018, the Trump administration briefly tried to suspend the credentials of a CNN journalist, and a lawsuit is currently ongoing against the White House over an attempt to restrict Associated Press journalists’ access to certain premises.
