Two lanes in each direction to be restored at Tallinn’s Hipodroomi intersection
By August 31, an additional traffic lane will open at the Hipodroomi intersection in Tallinn. This will make it possible to restore traffic in two lanes in each direction instead of the current 2+1 scheme, ERR News reports.
Work will continue
Tallinn Deputy Mayor Joel Jesse said that the additional lane should ease capacity problems at the intersection. At the same time, construction work in the area will continue, and traffic arrangements will still differ from the usual ones.
According to Jesse, traffic flow in Tallinn will increase with the start of the school year. Significant congestion and longer travel times are possible at the Hipodroomi intersection during peak hours. He urged drivers to plan their routes in advance, use alternative routes where possible, and use public transport.

Next stages of reconstruction
Construction of sidewalks will continue on Paldiski maantee, between Merelahe tee and Endla tänav, and some lanes will also be closed. The deputy mayor asked drivers not to use public transport lanes so that buses can adhere to their schedules as accurately as possible.
After September 1, work will continue on the outbound section of Paldiski maantee between Endla tänav and Mooni tänav. It is expected to open to traffic at the end of November. Work on the inbound section is due to begin at the start of next year, and the entire project is planned to be completed by the end of August 2027.
The project includes separate bicycle lanes, green islands, new lighting, and a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists. The existing tree-lined section on Paldiski maantee is also to be preserved, and drivers will be allowed to turn left from Hipodroomi tänav toward the city center.
