Presumed South Korean citizen goes missing during flooding in Thailand — Korea Herald

A man believed to be a South Korean citizen went missing during flooding in the eastern Thai city of Pattaya. He fell into a roadside drainage canal in Nong Prue, Chonburi province, and was swept away by the current, Korea Herald reports.

Searches in drainage canals

The incident occurred at around 5 a.m. on Thursday, when three men were walking through a flooded area. Surveillance cameras captured two of them being pulled into a drain. One man managed to climb back onto the road, while the other was carried away by the current.

Heavy rain lasted for more than an hour in Pattaya that morning, flooding roads and low-lying areas of the city. Rescuers, including divers, searched drainage canals and nearby waterways, but did not find the missing man.

Police establish the identities of the men

Police are trying to establish the identities of all three men, who are believed to be South Korean citizens. According to local media, the two survivors left the scene without contacting law enforcement and have not yet been found.

The day after the disappearance, police searched a house about one kilometer from the incident site, where the men are believed to have lived. They found wet clothing similar to that worn by two people in the camera footage, as well as three reportedly new desktop computers, other computer equipment and household items.

The landlord told police that three South Koreans had signed a one-year lease and moved in on September 12. Law enforcement officers, together with immigration authorities, are checking whether the tenants were the people involved in the incident and are also determining the origin and purpose of the computer equipment.

Heavy downpours also caused extensive flooding in Bangkok. About 300 millimeters of rain fell in part of the metropolitan region over the 48 hours beginning on Thursday. According to Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt, all 50 districts of the city were declared disaster zones, while around 4,200 displaced residents were accommodated in more than 200 temporary shelters.
