In Qingdao, the time couriers spend waiting at traffic lights will be factored into delivery times

Alibaba’s Taobao Flash Sale express delivery platform, also known as Taobao Shangou, has introduced a mechanism that counts the time couriers spend waiting at traffic lights toward their allowed delivery time. The Chinese city of Qingdao in Shandong Province was one of the first to implement this system.

The system automatically detects when a courier stops at a red light. A marker indicating the wait at the traffic light appears on the navigation page, and the duration of the stop is recorded without manual data entry.

In the initial phase, the program covers all Taobao Flash Sale couriers in the Jimo district of Qingdao. Going forward, the platform plans to expand the system to other areas.

According to ECNS, the initiative is part of broader efforts by Taobao Flash Sale to improve courier safety through technology and cooperation with local authorities. The platform uses AI-based tools to alert couriers to the risks of speeding, distracted driving, and running red lights. It also conducts road safety training and offers incentives to couriers.

Among the platform’s other initiatives are smart pickup stations for order collection and improvements to delivery services. These are intended to reduce the workload on couriers and increase delivery efficiency.
