Turkey has introduced stricter document checks for tourists
Foreign tourists in Turkey have been reminded of their obligation to carry a valid photo ID. Violation of this rule may result in a fine, detention, or further verification of the legality of their stay in the country.
Under Turkish law, foreigners must carry a photo ID at all times. For tourists, this document is their original passport.
If law enforcement officers stop a traveler without a passport, they may be fined up to $130, escorted to their place of residence to retrieve the document, or taken to a police station to verify their identity and check the legality of their stay in Turkey.
There are no age exceptions during these checks. Therefore, tourists traveling with children are advised to carry passports not only for adults but also for minor travelers.
Documents may even be checked during travel between cities. In particular, there are police checkpoints on Turkey’s major highways where passengers on buses, taxis, and rental cars may be asked to present their passports.
In addition to the requirement to carry a passport with you while in the country, the document must meet certain requirements for entry into Turkey.
Specifically, the passport must be valid for at least 150 days from the date of arrival and contain at least one blank page for the necessary stamps.
Tourists are advised to check the validity of their passport in advance and not to leave the original document at the hotel if they plan to travel around the city or between towns.
