In Telford, United Kingdom, police detained a man after he attacked a Sikh driver and seized a city bus. According to West Mercia Police, the bus was travelling in the oncoming lane and collided with several cars. The incident occurred on 18 September at around 6:30 p.m. on Court Street in the Madeley area.

Attack on the driver

As NDTV World reports, the incident was captured on video. The footage shows a man pulling the driver by his beard and headbutting him. The driver asks a female witness to call the police while the attacker demands that he hand over the bus.

According to police, the man later forced the driver out of the bus, got behind the wheel and drove along Park Way towards High Street. The bus travelled in the wrong lane and collided with several vehicles.

Detention and charges

Police received the report at 6:37 p.m. Telford local police superintendent Edward Hancox said officers arrived at the scene and detained the man within 10 minutes of the first call. Armed officers from Malinsgate police station were involved in the operation.

The driver received medical assistance for minor injuries, and police said there were no other casualties. Ali Balhad, 33, was charged with aggravated vehicle taking, assault, attempted grievous bodily harm, dangerous driving, robbery, shoplifting, threats to kill, and three counts of criminal damage. He was remanded in custody until a hearing at Telford Magistrates' Court scheduled for 21 September.
