UK to equip courtrooms for rape cases — Anadolu Agency
Over the next two years, the United Kingdom plans to equip at least one specialized courtroom in every Crown Court in England and Wales to hear cases involving rape and other serious sexual offences. This was reported by Anadolu Agency, citing a statement by the British government.
Priority for rape cases
Under the government’s plan, rape cases will be heard as a priority. This is intended to reduce uncertainty and delays for victims. The specialized courtrooms will also provide separate waiting areas and entrances for victims.
The government said the new approach should place victims at the centre of the criminal justice system and help hold more perpetrators accountable.

Prime minister’s statement
Prime Minister Andy Burnham said that victims of rape and serious sexual offences had felt abandoned by the justice system for too long. According to him, prosecution rates in rape cases remain shamefully low, while many victims wait years for justice.
Burnham also said that, alongside the creation of specialized courtrooms, significant changes would take place to refocus the justice system on the needs of victims. He added that the authorities must not only deliver justice but also strengthen the prevention of such crimes.
