ShinyHunters claims FBI breach in the US and data theft — CBC World

Hacking group ShinyHunters has claimed to have breached the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation and allegedly stolen data belonging to thousands of agency employees. As CBC World reports, the FBI did not immediately comment in response to a Reuters request on Tuesday.

Group's statement

ShinyHunters said on its dark web site and in online communication with Reuters that it attacked the FBI in response to the agency's May 2026 notice. In it, the bureau described the group's methods and advised targets of attacks not to make payments.

The group also published a screenshot that it described as an image of an altered FBI jobs website, as well as a sample of allegedly stolen data.

What could be verified

Reuters was unable to verify the authenticity of the published screenshot. At the same time, the FBI employment website on Tuesday displayed a notice stating that the site itself and the portal for special agent applicants were temporarily unavailable.

The agency partially verified the authenticity of some of the allegedly stolen personal data by matching names and mailing addresses with credit bureau records and information from previous leaks held by District 4 Labs. Reuters found matches in at least nine cases, but did not establish the origin of the data or confirm that it was stolen specifically from the FBI's internal systems.
