Six opposition candidates were detained in Armenia ahead of the election

In Armenia, on the eve of the general election, six candidates from an opposition party—which local authorities link to pro-Russian forces—were detained. The party in question is “Strong Armenia,” led by Russian-Armenian businessman Samvel Karapetyan, who is currently under house arrest on charges of inciting the overthrow of the government.

Parliamentary elections will take place in the country on June 7. Polls show that the “Civic Contract” party of pro-European Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan holds a significant lead, with support ranging from 24% to 32% of voters.

The pro-Russian “Strong Armenia” party is in second place with support ranging from 6% to 11% of voters.

Armenia’s Ministry of Internal Affairs stated earlier this week that it had identified at least 78 cases of election-related crimes. Forty-four people have been detained.

This was reported by Reuters.
