The Pentagon is developing a new nuclear weapons strategy for a war with China or Russia – NBC

The U.S. Department of Defense is developing a new nuclear strategy that places particular emphasis on the potential use of shorter-range tactical weapons in the event of a regional conflict with China or Russia. 

The effort is being led by Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby, who was behind the cuts to aid for Ukraine and the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Europe.

As part of the new plan, the options for a nuclear counterstrike—which are presented to the U.S. president during a crisis—are to be updated. The main goal of the new strategy is to prevent a conventional war from escalating into a nuclear one, as well as to prevent an adversary from exploiting a regional conflict for its own interests.
