Uber Technologies and Zipline have agreed to launch autonomous drone deliveries of Uber Eats orders in the United States. The first such deliveries are scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.
The new service is designed to deliver food to customers without the need for couriers, using autonomous drones.
The companies plan to begin the first deliveries as early as this year. Initially, the service will launch in U.S. markets where Zipline already has the necessary infrastructure, after which it is planned to expand to dozens more cities.
By the end of 2029, the partners expect to reach 1 million drone deliveries per day.
Along with the partnership, Uber also made a strategic investment in Zipline. The company did not disclose the financial details of the deal.
Zipline operates on four continents and has already completed approximately 2 million deliveries. Earlier this year, the company raised $800 million in funding, after which it was valued at $7.6 billion.
In the U.S., Zipline already partners with Walmart, as well as a number of restaurant chains, including Panera, Chipotle, and Wendy’s.
This is not Uber’s first venture into drone delivery. Last year, the company struck a similar deal with the drone delivery operator Flytrex and also invested in it.
