In the Strait of Hormuz, a munition struck a cargo ship

A cargo ship was struck by a projectile while passing through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). According to the UKMTO, the incident damaged the ship’s engine room, and one crew member was injured. The Omani Coast Guard is assisting the other crew members.

The incident occurred after a 60-day truce for negotiations between the U.S. and Iran, agreed upon in mid-June, ended without a new official agreement. According to CNBC, Washington and Tehran have ruled out further negotiations.

U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he does not plan to extend the truce in the near future. According to him, Tehran will not agree to the terms he considers necessary to end the war.

According to CNBC, citing Fox News, Iranian military spokesman Ebrahim Zolfaghari threatened to damage the hulls of any ships attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. Analysts at the Eurasia Group believe that the U.S. and Iran are preparing for a prolonged standoff, as neither side sees an urgent need to make concessions.

The Eurasia Group no longer expects a peace agreement before September and has pushed back its projected timeline for de-escalation to the end of the year. According to analysts, the most likely outcome could be a limited agreement that would allow only a partial resumption of traffic through the strait.

Before the war, approximately one-fifth of the world’s crude oil and natural gas supplies passed through the Strait of Hormuz. According to the vessel-tracking service Kpler, only three ships crossed the strait on Sunday. After the ceasefire negotiations ended, oil prices rose: U.S. crude futures gained 0.25% on Tuesday to $84.70 per barrel, while Brent traded at $90.86 per barrel.
