Ukraine Should Recognize the Volhynia Tragedy as Genocide to Join the EU — Speaker of the Polish Sejm
Włodzimierz Czazasty, Speaker of the Polish Sejm, stated that Ukraine must recognize the Volhynia tragedy of 1943–1944 as genocide against Poles if it aspires to become a member of the European Union.
According to him, joining the EU means not only reaping benefits but also being willing to honestly assess one’s own history. He emphasized that “genocide must be called genocide” and that no country can evade responsibility for historical events.
Chazhasty also expressed concern over the deterioration of Polish-Ukrainian relations and called for the restoration of trust between the two nations. He condemned acts of hostility toward both Ukrainians in Poland and Poles in Ukraine, stressing the importance of ongoing dialogue between the parliaments of the two countries.

As a reminder, in the Polish city of Gdynia, law enforcement officers detained a 76-year-old Polish citizen who brutally attacked a 40-year-old Ukrainian woman. According to the investigation, the man beat the woman with a stick, after which he was detained by criminal investigators from the local police department.
In the town of Kozhukhiv (Lubusz Voivodeship), on the evening of August 1, three Ukrainian citizens—37-year-old Volodymyr, 32-year-old Vasyl, and 28-year-old Adelina—were attacked. The incident took place on the private grounds of the hostel where the victims were staying.
