Trump has appointed a new White House legal adviser
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the appointment of Will Scharf as White House Counsel. He is scheduled to take office on September 1.
Scharf, who previously served as Trump’s attorney, will replace David Warrington in this role. According to the U.S. president, his predecessor is leaving the administration to take a position in the private sector.
It should be noted that the appointment comes roughly two months before the midterm congressional elections. If the House of Representatives or the Senate falls under Democratic control, the White House Counsel’s Office could find itself at the center of disputes over congressional investigations, subpoenas, summonses for officials to testify, and the administration’s right to withhold certain information.
The White House Counsel advises the president and senior administration officials and helps formulate responses to congressional investigations. Democrats are already preparing to make more active use of their subpoena powers if they win a majority after the November elections.
Sharf was previously a member of Trump’s personal legal team. In particular, he worked on the case regarding presidential immunity, which was heard by the U.S. Supreme Court.
His appointment continues a trend in which Trump’s former lawyers are being appointed to influential legal positions in his administration. Todd Blanche, who also previously represented Trump, was confirmed on Saturday as U.S. Solicitor General. D. John Sauer, who represented Trump’s position in the presidential immunity case before the Supreme Court, has served as U.S. Solicitor General since 2025.
Prior to his new appointment, Scharf served as White House Chief of Staff and oversaw the flow of documents sent to and from the president.
He also heads the National Capital Planning Commission, which has been overseeing the construction of the new White House ballroom. Late last week, an appeals court suspended the project.
