Ukrainian experts are helping NATO counter drone attacks
Experts from the NATO-Ukraine Joint Analysis, Training, and Education Center (JATEC) advised military personnel during Alliance exercises in Latvia on repelling drone attacks.
More than 1,000 military personnel from 25 NATO countries and Ukraine participated in the exercises. Ukrainian experts shared with participants their practical experience in countering UAVs, gained during the war.
LCI-X 3-26 Execution marked the third phase of exercises aimed at testing and integrating solutions for countering drones in support of NATO’s eastern flank.
The exercise brought together over 1,000 participants
The exercises took place this month in Latvia and were part of Exercise Baltic Trust. In total, more than 1,000 participants took part, including military personnel from 25 NATO countries and Ukraine.
The third phase of the LCI-X experiment moved from working with disparate elements of counter-drone operations to multi-element integration at the tactical level and within NATO command and control systems.
How Ukrainian Experts Enhanced NATO Training
Ukrainian experts focused on aligning NATO experiments with the realities of the current battlefield:
They adjusted the scenario to reflect frontline realities. Ukrainian experts provided recommendations for the exercise plan even before it began, fine-tuning the UAV flight parameters.
They controlled the actions of the “simulated adversary.” During the active phase, JATEC specialists monitored and coordinated the crews of the simulated adversary, ensuring strict adherence to flight plans and threat profiles.
The third phase of LCI-X enabled the Alliance to move from testing individual elements of counter-drone operations to multi-element integration at the tactical level and within NATO’s command and control (C2) systems.
One of JATEC’s top priorities is the systematic involvement of Ukrainian service members with combat experience in joint activities with the Alliance. This not only strengthens the partners’ defensive capabilities but also accelerates the operational interoperability of the Ukrainian Armed Forces with NATO standards and systems.
