Ukrainian and Polish Scouts Will Jointly Honor the Soldiers of the Ukrainian People's Republic Army in Warsaw
In Warsaw, representatives of the Ukrainian Plast organization in Poland and the Polish Scouting Association will hold a joint event called “The Flame of Brotherhood.” Young people will honor the memory of the soldiers of the Ukrainian People’s Republic Army, who fought alongside Polish troops for freedom over a hundred years ago.
“On August 14 at 6:00 p.m., near the monument to the soldiers who fought for a Free Ukraine at the Orthodox Cemetery in Wola, Warsaw, Ukrainians and Poles will gather together to light the ‘Flame of Brotherhood’ and honor the memory of those who stood shoulder to shoulder in the struggle for freedom,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported.
Vasyl Bodnar, Ukraine’s ambassador to the Republic of Poland, and other representatives of Ukraine’s diplomatic mission will participate in the ceremony.
Commemorative events will also take place in Kyiv near the monument to Polish soldiers at the Baikove Cemetery and in Zhytomyr.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs noted that over a century ago, in 1920, Ukrainian soldiers of the Army of the Ukrainian People’s Republic and Polish troops faced a common threat—Bolshevik Russia. The Ukrainians fought for Ukraine’s independence, while the Poles fought for the freedom of their reborn state. Together, they fought in the Kyiv Offensive and later joined forces to defend Warsaw and Zamość.
“In Polish historical memory, these events have forever been enshrined as the ‘Miracle on the Vistula’—a victory made possible by the courage of those who defended their freedom in the face of a common threat. Today, 106 years later, Ukrainians and Poles are once again lighting the ‘Flame of Brotherhood’ to honor the Ukrainian soldiers of the UNR Army who fought alongside Polish troops for freedom,” the Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized.
