The far-right Alternative for Germany wins the election in Saxony-Anhalt
The far-right party “Alternative for Germany” (AfD) has won the state election in Saxony-Anhalt, achieving its best result since its founding in 2013.
According to exit poll results published by ARD, the AfD received 44.5% of the vote, significantly outperforming the ruling Christian Democratic Union (CDU), which received 18.5%.
The anti-capitalist Left Party received 9.5% of the vote, the Social Democrats 8%, and the Greens 9%. The figures may change, as vote counting will continue throughout the evening. The federal state of Saxony-Anhalt, with a population of about two million, has the lowest GDP per capita among all 16 German states.

Two months before the Berlin House of Representatives election, the right-wing populist party “Alternative for Germany,” led by Christine Brinker, took the lead in the polls for the first time.
Sven Schulze, the prime minister of the German state of Saxony-Anhalt, called on the ruling CDU/CSU coalition to conclude personnel discussions at the federal level as soon as possible, so that they do not disrupt the campaign ahead of the state parliamentary elections. Voting in Saxony-Anhalt is scheduled for September 6.
