Melbourne Airport to relocate passenger drop-off and pick-up zones — ABC News Australia
New passenger drop-off and pick-up zones will begin operating at Melbourne Airport in Australia on October 6. The existing zones will cease operations, and cars will have to use new areas in the covered parking zone, ABC News Australia reports.
New route to the terminals
Drivers dropping off or picking up passengers will have to exit the Tullamarine Freeway earlier, at Exit 19. They will then need to travel to the terminals via an overpass. The airport called this the biggest change to its road network since it opened in 1970.
At the same time, a free waiting area near Mercer Drive, where visitors can stay for up to 60 minutes, will continue to operate.

Expansion of the international terminal
Melbourne Airport chief executive Lorie Argus said relocating the drop-off and pick-up zones would make it possible to expand the international terminal. According to her, more than 100,000 people use the airport every day, while annual passenger traffic is projected to reach 75 million by 2047.
The new areas are intended to separate private and commercial vehicle flows. Passengers will also be able to wait for transport under cover and near toilets. Previously, passengers had been dropped off at the departures ramp for 56 years, since the airport opened.
