During her visit to Yerevan, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed unwavering support for Armenia on its path toward democratic reforms, peace, and deeper cooperation with the European Union. She also announced a new aid package worth 200 million euros and the possibility of mobilizing up to 2 billion euros for infrastructure projects in the region.

During a joint press conference with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Ursula von der Leyen congratulated him on his victory in the parliamentary elections held on June 7.

“Congratulations on your victory in the June 7 elections to the National Assembly of Armenia. These elections have once again demonstrated the strength of democracy in Armenia. The spirit of the Velvet Revolution, which you led in 2018, is alive and thriving, she said.

The President of the European Commission emphasized that Armenia continues to move forward on the path of democratic transformation.

“Armenia continues on the path of democracy, reforms, peace, and closer cooperation with the EU. I have come here to say that you can count on us. As Armenia moves closer to the EU, the South Caucasus also moves closer to it, von der Leyen noted.

The European Commission President praised Armenia’s steps toward resolving the situation in the region.

“The initialing of the peace agreement last year was a historic event—one of the most important steps taken in this region in recent decades. The same applies to the ongoing normalization of relations with Turkey. These decisions required political courage and leadership, and I know that their results will be impressive,” she said.

According to von der Leyen, opening the borders has the potential to significantly change Armenia’s economic future and make the country one of the region’s key transportation and logistics hubs.

The President of the European Commission announced a new financial support package for Armenia.

“That is why I have announced a new support package worth 200 million euros as part of the Global Gateway initiative, which aims to foster interdependence for peace, she stated.

In addition, the EU, together with international financial partners, is ready to mobilize up to 2 billion euros to implement strategic transportation, energy, and digital projects in the South Caucasus.

According to Ursula von der Leyen, funding in Armenia will be directed toward the development of border crossing points, road infrastructure, and other strategic infrastructure projects.

At the same time, the European Union announced a separate €20 million peace support program, which will be dedicated to the development and support of border communities.

“We are building real, physical infrastructure that will promote peace. At the same time, we are building bridges between people, the President of the European Commission concluded.

In addition, the European Commission has officially confirmed that Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will make working visits to Azerbaijan and Armenia on July 1 and 2. The Commission also outlined the key objectives of the upcoming trips.

Von der Leyen mentioned a possible date for Montenegro’s accession to the EU.

Additionally, Ukraine has received invitations from Asian countries, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced new visits and agreements.
