Ursula von der Leyen will visit Armenia
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will visit Armenia next week, a move that will send a political signal of support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan’s government.
The European Union delegation will also include European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos.
According to sources, the visit is intended to demonstrate the EU’s support following the landslide victory of Pashinyan’s pro-European party in the parliamentary elections in June.
“The EU delegation … will visit Armenia as part of a strong show of support for Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan after his pro-European party won a landslide victory in the country’s parliamentary elections in June,” the statement said.
The visit comes amid Yerevan’s push to draw closer to the European Union and gradually reduce its dependence on Russia.
“The visit will send a strong signal of support, building on the concrete assistance that has already been provided,” noted one EU official.
Following the elections, Pashinyan’s government accelerated its foreign policy pivot, notably suspending its participation in the CSTO, expressing interest in future EU membership, and strengthening cooperation with European institutions.
This is expected to be Ursula von der Leyen’s second visit to Armenia in less than two months. She previously visited Yerevan in May during the European Political Community summit and the first EU–Armenia summit.
The European Union views the changes in Armenia as part of broader geopolitical processes in the region, particularly following the reduction of Russia’s military presence in Nagorno-Karabakh and the shifting balance of power in the South Caucasus.
Thus, von der Leyen’s visit is intended to send a clear political signal of support for Armenia’s pro-European course and its current leadership.
