China has deployed a floating exploration platform near the disputed Scarborough Reef

China has deployed a small floating platform in the disputed waters of the South China Sea; it was spotted near the Scarborough Shoal. The structure may be used for reconnaissance and intelligence-gathering activities in the region.

According to the Philippine Coast Guard, the structure, measuring approximately 6×6 meters, was first spotted at the entrance to the Scarborough Lagoon in early June.

It was later also observed inside the lagoon, where it was located in an area under active patrol.

Philippine authorities stated that the platform may have had personnel on board, but the Chinese side described the structure as temporary scientific research equipment.

The incident immediately sparked a diplomatic reaction. Manila lodged an official protest with Beijing, and Taiwan also expressed concern over the object’s appearance in the disputed maritime zone.

Observers note that the platform did not remain in one place. It was spotted both near the entrance to the Scarborough Lagoon and inside the reef system, after which the object disappeared from the observation area.

The Scarborough Shoal is located approximately 200 kilometers west of Luzon Island and is of strategic importance for controlling fishing grounds and maritime routes in the region.

The Philippines emphasizes that China has maintained a constant coast guard presence in this area since 2012, which effectively restricts access for local fishermen.

In 2016, an international arbitration tribunal rejected China’s claims to “historic rights” in the region; however, Beijing did not recognize this ruling and continued its policy of de facto control through patrols and infrastructure presence.

The appearance of the floating platform is seen as part of a broader strategy to gradually consolidate influence without formally establishing military bases, using scientific and civilian formats. Even temporary structures of this type set precedents that alter the behavior of coastal states and intensify pressure in disputed maritime areas.
