Ursula von der Leyen condemned Russia's attacks on the Kyiv region and Sloviansk
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen condemned the latest Russian attacks on Ukraine, particularly the strikes on the Kyiv region and Sloviansk. She stated that Russia continues to deliberately target civilian facilities in an attempt to intimidate Ukrainians.
The European Commission President also drew attention to the destruction of the Latvian Honorary Consulate, calling it yet another example of Moscow’s disregard for international rules and diplomacy.
Ursula von der Leyen noted that Russian attacks will not change the position of Ukraine and its partners. According to her, the strikes on peaceful cities are an attempt by Russia to put pressure on Ukrainian society and weaken its resistance. “Russia is losing the war it started—and is therefore increasingly targeting civilians in a desperate attempt to break the spirit of the Ukrainian people,” the European Commission President stated.
She emphasized that Ukraine continues to fight, and the European Union remains ready to support its defense. “Ukraine’s will is unbreakable. So is Europe’s determination to support Ukraine’s defense,” von der Leyen added.
Separately, she mentioned the damage to the Honorary Consulate of Latvia caused by a Russian attack. In her view, such actions demonstrate that the Kremlin does not respect not only Ukraine’s sovereignty but also international diplomatic norms. Earlier, Ukrainian authorities reported on the consequences of Russian strikes on civilian infrastructure and residential areas. The attacks damaged homes and civilian infrastructure, and there were casualties among civilians.
The European Union regularly condemns Russian shelling of Ukrainian cities and emphasizes that it will continue to provide Ukraine with military, financial, and humanitarian aid. She posted this on her X account.
As a reminder, in Kharkiv, a Russian drone struck a car, killing the driver.
On July 24, at around 11:30 a.m., Russian forces launched an attack on the Kyiv region with three “Iskander-M”/S-400 ballistic missiles from the north. Air defense forces intercepted one missile; the other two struck the Bucha district.
