Fountain near Kwame Nkrumah monument in Accra runs dry — MyJoyOnline
In Accra, Ghana, the fountain surrounding the statue of the country’s first president, Kwame Nkrumah, at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange has run dry. Tiles at the site are damaged, the lighting appears not to be working, and rubbish has accumulated around it, MyJoyOnline reports.
Condition of the fountain
Nkrumah’s statue at the center of the complex remains in place, but the fountain around it is not operating. The outlet notes that after the interchange opened in 2016, water flowed through the fountain’s channels, the blue-and-white tiles were intact, and the structure was illuminated by colored lights at night.

The complex’s current condition became the subject of a report for Founders’ Day. The article mentions Nkrumah’s statement that Black people are capable of managing their own affairs. The outlet calls these words one of the defining assertions for Ghana’s independence and African self-determination.
Visitor’s reaction
Administrator Desmond, who visited the site in the first years after its opening, expressed disappointment with its changes. According to him, the complex needs to be maintained in order to honor the memory of Ghana’s first president and the country’s founder.
