209 people were detained in Ankara during a large-scale counterterrorism operation

In the Turkish capital of Ankara, police and the gendarmerie carried out a series of raids, during which they detained a total of 209 suspects believed to be involved with several terrorist groups.

The special operations were part of heightened security and protection measures ahead of the annual NATO leaders’ summit, which will take place in the city next month.

Investigators from the Ankara Chief Prosecutor’s Office coordinated the efforts of anti-terrorism units from the police and gendarmerie, who were searching for a total of 241 individuals linked to the “Islamic State” (ISIS) and a number of banned far-left organizations, including the DHKP/C, TKP/ML, and MLKP. Meanwhile, in Istanbul and seven other provinces across the country, local prosecutors reported the arrest of 24 suspects from the ranks of the radical group DHKP/C, while 13 others are currently wanted. These groups are recognized as major security threats to Turkey: ISIS is responsible for a series of bloody terrorist attacks that have claimed dozens of victims in the past, and DHKP/C extremists have been carrying out armed attacks and political assassinations in major Turkish cities since the 1980s.

This was reported by Daily Sabah.

In the port of the Turkish city of Marmaris, police detained four people for participating in a demonstration near the French Navy frigate Guepratte, which had docked in the city as part of a NATO mission
