In Argentina, Fernández de Kirchner’s supporters seek to lift ban on her candidacy
In Argentina, supporters of former president Cristina Fernández de Kirchner are running an international campaign to secure the lifting of a lifetime ban on her candidacy following the verdict in the Vialidad case. They want to make it possible for her to run in the 2027 elections, Buenos Aires Times reports.
Appeal to the UN committee
The campaign is being led by the Cristina Libre committee, created by representatives of the hardline wing of Kirchnerism. Its members have already undertaken political missions to Brazil, Mexico, Colombia, Paraguay, Uruguay, Italy, France and Belgium. There, they stated that efforts are being made to bar Fernández de Kirchner from participating in elections.
The movement plans to use the model of Brazil’s Lula Livre campaign and shift part of the legal battle from Argentina’s Comodoro Py federal court to international bodies. Brazilian lawyer Rafael Valim and former European Court judge Javier Borrego were enlisted to submit the case to the UN Human Rights Committee in Geneva.
According to the committee’s plan, the case in Geneva will not directly concern the substance of the verdict in the Vialidad case. The former president’s supporters seek an assessment of the proceedings as violating the guarantees of the American Convention on Human Rights. This line of work is to proceed in parallel with appeals to Argentina’s Supreme Court.

Possible participation in the 2027 elections
Former senator and head of the Instituto Patria think tank Oscar Parrilli said that Fernández de Kirchner’s lawyers had also filed a motion for the temporary lifting of the restriction that prevents her from running as a candidate. According to him, a decision on this could be made between October 2026 and March 2027.
Parrilli did not rule out Fernández de Kirchner’s participation in the 2027 PASO primaries, but stressed that no final decision has been made. He also said that President Javier Milei and former president Mauricio Macri allegedly fear her participation in the elections because, in his view, she could defeat them both.
Cristina Libre’s work is taking place in parallel with Fernández de Kirchner’s leadership of the national Justicialist Party. The campaign under the slogan “Cristina — candidate 2027” strengthens her position in Peronists’ internal debate on renewing the party, particularly amid the political ambitions of Buenos Aires Province Governor Axel Kicillof.
